Our team recently held our Sexual Reproductive Health Education in our schools in the Western Area and the South. Our team taught lessons on puberty and hygiene to boys and girls, including menstruation for the girls. There have been no cases of pregnancy among students in any of our schools this year. Students who have received this education in the past couple years have done very well in school and most have been promoted to secondary school. The junior secondary school girls in our previous classes ran over to see our team when they heard that we were around to join the classes.

Most of the children who received the reproductive health education this time were in the class for the first time, so our team emphasized the importance of hygiene. Our team talked to students about how keeping their bodies and the environment clean makes them healthy. Washing hands saves lives because one of the reasons people get sick is from germs that can cause infection and make them sick with diarrhea and many other health problems, making them have to miss school. The students understood the fact that staying healthier is as easy as washing their hands well with soap and water before and after preparing food, eating, using the latrine, touching an animal, and helping a sick person. The students were happy for the education they received, since some of them have started menstruation but didn’t know what it was, its importance or the consequences they may encounter if they do not take proper care of themselves.
