In January the primary school in Gbaama officially opened. Bob and Julie Granger, former Peace Corps Volunteers in the village, flew from Portland to Sierra Leone to attend the ceremony. They had a wonderful reunion with the headmaster of the school, whom they knew as Peace Corps Volunteers 50 years ago.

“Retuning to Gbaama and reconnecting with our friends after 50 years was a deeply emotional experience. We recognized how much our early married life was formed in the village. During our visit, the past and the present seemed to come together and, for a brief moment, time stood still. We are grateful to Schools for Salone and Programme for Children for helping make this reunion possible.” -Julie and Bob Granger

Gbaama is a small village outside Bo. The village was brought to our attention by Bob and Julie, who stayed in contact with people in Gbaama all these years. Some time ago heavy rains and wind destroyed the school, leaving behind a cement foundation. Thanks to the dedication of Bob and Julie, and of Garry Jenkins who donated in honor of his mother, this school is now up and running. The students and community members in Gbaama have been dedicated partners throughout the process of making this school a reality.  We are so impressed with their dedication to educating their children and so excited to see the children enjoying their new school.
