The opening ceremony for the Junior Secondary School project in Nyedu occurred on December 8. The ceremony had a wonderful turnout attended by students, parents, town leadership and regional leadership. Many, many people traveled far to be a part of this special day. Thank you to John Koroma for his hard work to make this school possible and to Terry and Carolyn Gannon for providing the necessary support.

“Terry and I attended the school’s dedication on December 8th, along with the school’s champion John Koroma, Natalie Gordon from Schools for Salone, Juliet from Programme for Children, and RoseAnn Rotandaro from The Village Link. Hundreds of villagers, schoolchildren, dignitaries, parents and entertainers took part in the overall experience. Gratitude for this accomplishment was overflowing.” -Carolyn Gannon

This Junior Secondary School is in the village where John Koroma lived as a child before the war. He has worked hard to coordinate the construction of this school. There is no other junior secondary school in the area, so after primary school students had to stop their education or risk moving far away to continue their studies. The completion of this school is the accomplishment of a big dream for John and the entire Nyedu community. Now girls in this region have a safe place to pursue their education past primary school, lifting up the whole potential for this area of Sierra Leone.

The new school was approved by the government in December and nine qualified teachers have arrived in Nyedu and started teaching full time. School is in session for the new term and this school is already serving 97 girls and 85 boys.
