Mile 38 is a semi-urban community in Sierra Leone. In order to meet the needs of the children in this community, the Baptist Convention of Sierra Leone, under the leadership of Pastor Simon M. Sesay established an orphanage in Mile 38 after the war. Mile 38 does not have a school for the children in the community to continue their education once they finish primary school. The support of Evangel Temple Full Gospel Church in Washington State, USA has enabled some of these orphans to complete their secondary education, motivating the graduates start a charter school as a means of helping other children who experience a similar plight like their own. Starting in 2012, sixty-five children began meeting in the community’s church as Mount Zion Baptist Junior Secondary School. This current arrangement limits both the number of students who can attend the school and the effectiveness of the school’s education. Cyril Faulkner, a member of Evangel Temple Full Gospel Church in the USA brought the need for a secondary school in Mile 38 to Schools for Salone’s attention in 2017. 

The Programme for Children’s board of directors went to the the Mile 38 school site in February for an oversight visit. The walls are up and the roof is on! The school is nearing completion and the students and whole community are so excited to have a secondary school to expand educational opportunity for the region.
