On October 18-21, The Learning Foundation traveled to our schools in northern Sierra Leone to hold a weekend-long teacher training workshop. The workshop focused on literacy, teaching strategies, and teaching and learning materials.
On the 18th, The Learning Foundation staff met with the head teachers of the schools to explain the workshop contents so head teachers can continue to support their teachers in the use of the tools and strategies they learned at the training.
The workshop consisted of group activities, presentations, and instruction on use of the new teaching and learning materials. Teachers who attended the training received playdough, learn-to-read phonics books, and other materials to help teachers teach students to read.
On the last day of the workshop, TLF staff observed teachers in the classroom so teachers could practice what they learned with support and feedback from the trainers.

In late September to mid October, Schools for Salone staff visited our partners in Sierra Leone. Mahnaz Javid, CEO of the Mona Foundation which funded the junior secondary school in Jomborhun, traveled with our team to open the Jomborhun school. The team also attended the opening ceremony for the junior secondary school in Kambawama and visited several schools around the country. In the North, there was a large celebration at Masanga, a school where our partners recently finished constructing two additional classrooms.
In addition to opening these two new schools, the team spent valuable time connecting with our partners, Programme for Children, The Learning Foundation, and The Sierra Leone Book Trust. They visited the Uman Talk Project, met with the staff and tailors, and attended a menstruation kit distribution for survivors of the flooding in Freetown.
The trip was very productive, and our partners in Sierra Leone and the school communities send their thanks and best wishes to all who have generously given to make these programs and projects a reality.
