Schools for Salone is excited to strengthen our existing partnerships in 2020, while also expanding our partnerships and our geographical reach in Sierra Leone. Already this year we have two schools in the far north that are in the planning stages.
In this area of Sierra Leone, a shortage of schools and teachers has made it impossible for all children to be able to go to school. More than 80% of primary school teachers are untrained, and there is a massive shortage of school buildings, books, handwashing stations, and toilet facilities. To help address this need, Schools for Salone is partnering with communities to build a primary school in Kadanso and a junior secondary school in Koramansilaya.
Kadanso Primary School: The original school building in Kadanso was built by missionaries in 1985. An additional structure 2-classroom structure was built in 2008 because there was not enough space for all the students who wanted to go to school. Unfortunately, in June 2019, the school was blown away by heavy wind. The community is now using a temporary tarp structure but it leaks and is not conducive to good learning environment. Additionally, the number of children is too great for the space they have. Other communities around the area are also sending children to this school because it is the only school in the surrounding area. The community is willing and eager to provide local materials including sand, stone, and unskilled labor to help with the project, but the community is requesting help with skilled labor and funding to make this school a reality.
Koramansilaya Junior Secondary School: The existing school building in Koramansilaya is breaking down and starting to collapse. Additionally, students from other communities come to this school because it is the only junior secondary school in the area, so it is very full and there is not room for all the students. In response to this need, the community has built mud block structure but it is not permananent. There is unity among the community to get a permanent cement block junior secondary school structure. The community will provide local material and labor to help build the school because the community needs and believes in this building.
We are still working on gathering funds for these projects. We still need to raise $15,000 more for the school in Kadanso. If you are interested in partnering with us to make this school a reality, please donate below and write “Kadanso” in the donation comments. Thank you!

New Beginnings for Uman Tok (Woman Talk)

We are very excited to announce that Uman Tok is becoming its own organization! Uman Tok, Krio for Woman Talk, is the program that produces Days for Girls menstruation kits in Sierra Leone and distributes them to women and girls, along with reproductive health education. The Uman Tok program has continued to grow and expand as a program under Programme for Children Sierra Leone, to the point where Uman Tok is ready to separate from Programme for Children establish itself as its own organization in Sierra Leone. Schools for Salone will maintain the same close relationship with both Programme for Children and Uman Tok. We are so excited for Juliet and her team as they embark on this new phase of their journey. We have full confidence in their ability to continue to grow Uman Tok and bring life-changing menstruation kits and reproductive health education to women and girls in Sierra Leone.

Students at the junior secondary schools served by Mamboma library have been working so hard in school. They have been making good use of the library and are practicing reading. As a reward and encouragement for working hard in their studies, we have provided soccer jerseys and soccer balls to the students in this community. This soccer gear also gives students healthy, positive activities outside of school and studying.
