School Construction in the North

Our partners, Clinton and Salifu, have continued construction on the two new schools in the far northern area of Sierra Leone.
Kadanso Primary School is being built to replace the old school building, which blew away during heavy winds last June. The community at Kadanso has been without a school since then. The community members highly value education, and worked hard to gather resources to build a temporary tarp and stick structure until their school building could be replaced. Now, their new school building is almost complete!
Koromasilaia Junior Secondary School is also almost complete! The roof and ceiling work are done. Once finished, this junior secondary school will serve not only students in Koromasilaia, but also students coming from primary schools in 13 surrounding communities. There is a huge need for a junior secondary school in this area, and the school at Koromasilaia will open up futures of possibility for students in this region for generations to come.

School Construction in the South

Programme for Children has been managing four construction projects in southern Sierra Leone.
Laoma Junior Secondary School is just receiving its finishing touches. The school is painted and the toilets have been installed. This school will make it safer for children to continue their schooling past primary school. They will no longer have to walk for miles and navigate a dangerous river crossing on their way to and from school each day.
Largor Primary School is a community that highly values education, and has been requesting a school for their children. Students and adults are so eager for their new school, which will be a life-changing resource for this community. PFC is currently working on the concrete work, with help from community members.
Niagorehun Primary School is receiving an additional school building with two classrooms so the school can accommodate the growing number of students who wish to attend. PFC is also constructing another set of latrines with a handwashing station so all the students will still have enough access to bathroom facilities. The walls are up and the roof is on at Niagorehun’s new school building!
Muloma Vocational and Technical Center is a vocational school focused on teaching trade skills to women. The new school structure at this center will make it possible to hold more classes, and explore the possibility of hosting classes for the Ministry of Education’s teacher distance certification program. PFC has finished the blockwork for the walls and the water well.

Our partners in Sierra Leone have done an incredible job expanding and adapting their programming and operations to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our partners are maintaining flexibility to stay true to their mission while providing essential support to our school communities during this time.
Handwashing Supplies: PFC and our partners in the north have been delivering handwashing buckets with taps, facemasks, radios, and bars of soap to all our school communities. Along with the delivery of these supplies, our partners are educating community members on COVID-19 and the importance of washing hands to limit the spread of the virus. PFC has also been delivering bags of rice, since COVID-19 has contributed to an early start to hungry season.
Face Masks: Our partners at Uman Tok have been tirelessly sewing face masks by the thousands. The tailors have decided to stay at the Uman Tok office to improve productivity and safety of themselves and each other by limiting social contacts. The entire Uman Tok team believes strongly in what they are doing. So far, Uman Tok has produced over 6,000 face masks. In addition to supplying masks for our partners and communities, Uman Tok has received orders from the US Embassy, Peace Corps, medical organizations, and other groups and NGOs.
