Thanks to the Brock Foundation, a long-term donor who has seen the value and impact of the Uman Tok program, the tailors have new industrial machines to sew menstruation kits! Tailors now have more reliable income with machines that can keep up with kit demand. Uman Tok provides life-changing employment to women who would otherwise have no other way of supporting themselves and their families.

Before the Brock Foundation generously funded these industrial serger machines, the Uman Tok tailors had to work with inadequate machines that broke regularly and prevented them from being able to produce large quantities of kits, thus limiting the income they could make in a day. Now, one tailor can sew several hundred liners in just one day! This not only helps Uman Tok fulfill the ever-increasing demand for the kits, but also helps the tailors make a steady, reliable, and sufficient income.

Many of the Uman Tok tailors rely on what they make sewing kits to provide for themselves and their families. Uman Tok provides essential vocational training and job opportunities to disadvantaged women. These women have grown into a very close team working together to improve the lives of women and girls across Sierra Leone. When asked about her favorite part about working for Uman Tok, one tailor said:

“I like their plans and aims – to reach out to the women and girls and the less privileged and [those] in the provinces. I also enjoy it because we are working as a team – if we are doing a liner, we have those who are cutting, we have those who are sewing – you do not have to get up and do something else. Everything is done step by step. We have respect for each and every one of us”.
