Spreading a Love of Reading
[/fusion_title][fusion_text]
In early February, Schools for Salone sponsored The Rise Network’s two-day training for teacher-librarians from each of the 34 schools that received books from Rise Network’s library application process. The purpose of the training was to help each and every teacher librarian present to be able to properly set up their own Libraries in their respective schools and to be able to manage the affairs of the libraries by the end of the training.
The training was held at the Sierra Leone Library Board and covered a range of library management topics. The first day included discussions about how school libraries must exist as part of the school programs and their aim should be to supplement and complement the learning and teaching activities in schools. This discussion included an emphasis on the “books are for use” rule to stress that books are meant to be used. Day one also included training for sorting and classification of library materials.
On the second day, the training focused on how to set up and manage a library using the tools provided in the training, as well as a tour of the Sierra Library to see examples of how it is done. At the end of the training, TLF created a WhatsApp group for the participants so they can give a regular update on the status of their libraries and ask questions they may have. In addition to the WhatsApp group, TLF staff will monitor the success of the new libraries and provide additional support where necessary.
As a result of this training and support, the participants will be able to successfully set up libraries in their schools and be able to manage the libraries effectively. These teachers will help instill a reading culture into their students and ensure the sustainability of such culture in their schools.
