Empowering Girls

Our Uman Tok partners are officially their own NGO! They  have been making wonderful connections with other groups in Sierra Leone who are working with women and girls.

In the past month, the Uman Tok team has worked with Bomboli School for the Blind to distribute menstruation kits and teach reproductive health education. They have also connected with The Orthodox Mission of West Africa, who are very excited about the work Uman Tok is doing. Juliet and Kimberley also had a booth at a celebration of fashion event in Freetown.

Additionally, the tailors have been working in their new space and growing ever stronger as a team. We are so grateful for all the hard work of Uman Tok to empower girls in Sierra Leone.

6 Schools Under Construction

[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=””]

Our partners in Sierra Leone currently have 6 construction projects underway.

In the north, Clinton, Salifu, and Salifu’s construction team are building a junior secondary school in Koromasilaia. This community is so excited for the new school, and construction has been a community effort. The existing school building has started to collapse and does not have enough room for all the students, who come from many surrounding communities. The walls are up at the new school and work is progressing rapidly.

Clinton, Salifu and team are also working on a primary school in Kadanso, also in the far north. The previous school building in Kadanso was constructed in 1985 and was destroyed during storms in June 2019. This community is very poor with minimal resources and is facing many challenges to implementing the government’s new policy of free and quality education. Because of this lack of resources, children are being deprived of their right to quality education. The community has constructed a makeshift shelter out of sticks and blue tarps. The new school will make it possible for these children to go to school and make the most of their education.

In the South, PFC is working on 4 projects simultaneously! One project is an additional 2-classroom structure for the school in Naigorehun, which SfS funded in 2009. The original structure can no longer support the growing number of students who want to attend the school. What an exciting problem to have!

PFC’s second project is a junior secondary school in Laoma. Junior secondary students in Laoma currently have to travel 5 miles to the nearest school, including navigating a very dangerous river crossing. Thanks to the generosity of Will White and Satchi Royers, these students will soon have a junior secondary school close to home!

Largor is a community that has heard so much about the work of Schools for Salone and Programme for Children. They have no primary school in their community, and have been persistently requesting that our team help them build a school for their children. Now, that dream is becoming a reality as construction begins on their new primary school.

PFC’s fourth project, funded by the Mona Foundation, is constructing a 4-classroom structure at the Muloma Women’s Technical Vocational Center (MWTVC) in Koribondo. MWTVC was established to provide technical training opportunities, including programs in weaving, gara tie dying, needle work, catering, hair dressing, and food production, as well as basic education for participants who also wish to improve their numeracy and literacy skills. The new structure with four classrooms, an office, and a store room will be used for these programs.
